Understanding the School Choice Experience in NYC

iZone School Choice Discovery

Each year in NYC nearly 80,000 eighth-grade students apply to high school, choosing from more than 700 program options.  While the NYC Department of Education has made significant efforts to provide students and families with training and information resources to help them evaluate their school options, many still find it difficult to make a truly informed decision about where to apply.During the summer of 2013, the iZone formed a partnership with the Office of Student Enrollment and the Public Policy Lab to explore opportunities for improving the high school admissions process. We interviewed students, families, administrative staff, and policymakers to see what they had to say about the process of applying to high school in NYC.
